Charging the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 at Home
Most 200A panels can handle this car's 40A charger
The Volkswagen ID.4 offers a solid 11 kW onboard AC charger in the Pro S trim, making it well-matched to a 40A Level 2 setup. At 9.6 kW (40A), a 10–80% charge on the 82 kWh Pro battery completes in about 6.5 hours — perfect for overnight charging. Earlier ID.4 Pro trims (2021–2022) shipped with a 7.2 kW onboard charger; upgrading your outlet won't help if your car has the older unit — confirm your build sheet. The ID.4 uses the CCS1 standard and in 2024 gained access to Tesla Supercharger network via the NACS adapter, but home charging remains J1772 standard. VW's standard accessories include a portable Level 1/Level 2 cable that supports up to 32A for use with NEMA 14-50 outlets — useful for travel but not a replacement for a wall-mounted EVSE at home.
