Includes built-in inverter. Best for new solar installs. Gateway required.
13.5 kWh total · 5.8 kW continuous
Rate: 29.8¢/kWh
No federal tax credit for standalone batteries in 2026. Section 25D (which covered batteries with solar) expired Dec 31, 2025. State and utility rebates may still apply.
Installed cost estimates based on EnergySage 2024 battery market data and NREL storage reports. Actual costs vary by installer, region, electrical upgrade needs, and panel compatibility. State incentive availability changes — verify with your utility before purchasing. Get at least 3 installer quotes before committing.
Home Batteries in 2026: No Federal Credit, But State Incentives Remain
The Section 25D residential tax credit — which covered 30% of battery storage costs when paired with solar — expired December 31, 2025. A Powerwall 3 that cost an effective $10,500 after the credit now costs the full $14,000–$18,000 installed. That’s a significant shift.
However, several state programs offset some of that cost. California’s SGIP pays approximately $200/kWh, worth up to $2,700 on a single Powerwall 3. New York and Massachusetts have similar programs. And the value of battery backup — especially in hurricane, wildfire, and grid-stress regions — hasn’t changed.
How This Calculator Works
Enter your battery model, unit count, expected outage load, state, and whether you have solar. The calculator returns:
- Backup duration at your selected essential load level (based on manufacturer usable capacity specs)
- Installed cost range using EnergySage 2024 market data — not MSRP alone
- State incentive lookup (SGIP, NYSERDA, and similar programs by state)
- Annual savings and payback estimate if you have solar (self-consumption model) or high TOU rates
The calculator does not model whole-home electrification bundles. For solar + battery + heat pump combined ROI, use our Solar ROI Calculator alongside this tool.
