Charging the 2024 Chevrolet Bolt EV at Home
Works with most 100A panels at 40A
The Chevrolet Bolt EV is arguably the most panel-friendly mainstream EV available. Its 11.5 kW onboard charger accepts up to 48 amps, but the 65 kWh battery is small enough that even a 32A charger gives you a full overnight charge comfortably. Most 100-amp panels can safely add a 32A EV circuit — making the Bolt EV the go-to recommendation for customers in older homes not ready for a panel upgrade. At 40A (9.6 kW), a 10–80% charge takes about 5.5 hours. The Bolt uses CCS fast charging (up to 55 kW DC), which is slower than competing vehicles but adequate for road trips. One quirk: earlier Bolt generations limited AC charging to 7.2 kW — the 2024 model restored the 11.5 kW capability. If you're buying used, verify the model year to confirm which onboard charger it has.
